Student Interview Reflection
I interviewed three students about their previous experience with music education for this assignment. They are different ages and have differing perspectives about the role that music plays in their life. In conducting these interviews, I learned about experiences both similar and different to my own.
Laura: Laura is my sister. She has experienced music education in different ways, especially in the last year. She used to take ukulele lessons, and played in a few concerts. She decided this year, however, that ukulele was not for her. As she says in her video, she began taking piano lessons last month. She enjoys them, and takes time to practice regularly. Laura also participates in weekly music class at school. The students are preparing for an annual Christmas concert that will take place in December. Laura expresses that she is looking forward to this concert, as it is a tradition at her school. It is good that the school does this each year; it helps engage students in music in a positive and relaxed manner.
Laura was given the exciting opportunity to participate in my high school’s production of Seussical the Musical this year. She is playing the role of a “Who”, and is loving every minute of it. The high school decided to audition elementary students this year, and even gave some of the larger roles to grade 7 and 8 students. This is an amazing opportunity; it is giving younger students the chance to experience musical theatre in a mature, yet relaxed, setting. It is giving them the chance to explore outside of their elementary schools and try something that they might not have tried before.
Meghan: She is one of my best friends. We attended high school together, and we both played the trumpet. We played in band, had music classes, and went on band trips together. One of my favourite memories is when we played piano together. We played our favourite songs from Disney, Les Misérables, and Harry Potter. Sometimes we would even sing along! We share a love of music, which is one of the things that makes us great friends.
In her video, Meghan describes what music is to her. She uses it as a stress release; something she can turn to when she needs to relax or rest her mind. In this way, music and music education has had a large and lasting impact on her life. She does not take lessons or music classes any more, but she still applies her musical knowledge on a regular basis. Meghan also talks about listening to music, and how it helps her to stay calm. Even though she is studying science, music plays an important role in her life.
Lynn: Lynn is both my cousin and my friend. We have grown up together, and have made many memories. As she says in her video, music is an important aspect in Lynn’s life. She experienced most of her music education in elementary school. Although she has never taken lessons, Lynn has a great appreciation for music. Whether it is singing in the Church choir or listening to music, Lynn makes music a part of her everyday routine. In her video, she talks about the important role music plays in the world; she say that music is universal. It connects people despite their differences. She speaks briefly about how music helped her when she was sick. It gave her comfort and peace when she was otherwise not feeling well. Lynn had wonderful insights regarding music, and it was nice to hear her reflection. It is evident that music is, and will continue to be, important to her.
